I've done the first lesson, it is pretty much just like Minna no Nihongo, I knew it was the predecessor to it but didn't think they were so similar I have Minna I as well and had only flipped the pages but yesterday I sat down to go through the first lesson and it is essentially identical just different characters/scenarios (The target audience for Shin being foreign technical trainees) it even has almost the same vocabulary (first lesson anyway) similar dialogues and grammar.
I wondered if others have used this and stumbled onto this post. I started working with the book yesterday and although the translation does not seem to include some things (like the character chart for example, not sure if skipped in my scan or just how it is) I have translated that on my own and finding the grammar guide quite concise and well written.

I only have the book and grammar guide plus a really bad scan of the translation. I would love to hear more of how others used it. Second this! For Shin Nihongo no Kiso there are two separate supplements, a translation and a grammar guide (in Minna no Nihongo these are merged into one) to help you navigate the main text.
